The Southern Pacific (SP) AC-12 cab forward locomotives were oil-fired, articulated steam engines (4-8-8-2) built by Baldwin during World War II, notable for having their cabs located at the front to protect crews from smoke and soot in the long tunnels and snow sheds of Donner Pass and other mountain routes. These locomotives, including the last new steam engine SP ever purchased (#4294), were powerful, with a tractive effort of 124,300 pounds, enabling them to pull fast freight and passenger trains. Although they were retired by the 1950s due to dieselization, the famous AC-12 #4294 is preserved at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. AC-12s had a 63-inch driver diameter, a 250 psi boiler pressure, and a powerful tractive effort of 124,300 pounds, making them effective for heavy freight and passenger service. Features included a streamlined front with a white band, an air horn mounted on the front, and air compressors on the smokebox.

The primary reason for the cab-forward design was to protect the crew from the hazardous smoke, soot, and heat encountered in the long tunnels and snow sheds on SP's challenging mountain lines, particularly on Donner Pass and Cascade Summit. The engineer and fireman faced away from the firebox and the traditional layout, ensuring they could breathe clean air. The oil fuel could be easily piped from the rear tender to the front firebox.

The AC-12s were retired between 1955 and 1958 as diesel locomotives began to dominate the railroad industry.
