The EMD SD70ACe is a 4,300-horsepower, six-axle, AC-traction diesel-electric locomotive built by Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) from 2005 to 2015, designed for heavy-haul freight service and meeting EPA emission standards.Key features include a 16-cylinder diesel engine, AC traction motors for efficiency, a redesigned car body and cab for improved operation, and it's favored by Class I railroads for its reliability and pulling power.

A redesign of the SD70 series, incorporating a new car body and frame. An isolated cab helps reduce noise and vibration for crew comfort. AC traction motors improve efficiency and reliability compared to older DC-traction locomotives. The locomotive features a high-adhesion truck design (HTCR or HTSC trucks) to maximize tractive effort for heavy loads. Equipped with advanced diagnostics and monitoring systems to improve operational performance.

The SD70ACe is a workhorse for many North American freight railroads, including Union Pacific, BNSF, and Norfolk Southern. It is primarily used for heavy-haul freight, coal trains, and other heavy loads due to its substantial pulling power.

The SD70ACe was developed to meet new emission standards and is the successor to the SD70MAC.

Heritage SD70ACe locomotives are distinguished by their unique, special purpose paint schemes, which commemorate former railroads that merged into a larger railroad like Union Pacific, or celebrate American history and culture, such as the UP's "The Spirit" honoring the U.S. armed forces. While the underlying SD70ACe model is a powerful, EMD-designed heavy-haul freight locomotive, the "heritage" aspect refers specifically to its distinctive livery rather than a functional change to the locomotive itself.

Many heritage units, such as those on the Union Pacific, honor former railroad companies that became part of the larger corporation, with numbers often relating to the year of the merger.
