A durable, steel-constructed passenger car built by the Pullman Company during the early to mid-20th century, featuring a unique layout with ten private sleeping sections and a combined lounge and buffet area at the rear.These "heavyweight" cars replaced older, less safe wooden cars, providing a safer and more comfortable travel experience with amenities like adjustable seats, improved ventilation, and later, air conditioning. Initially featuring an open rear platform, these cars were often modified to an enclosed "solarium," providing a stylish observation area for passengers.

Unlike earlier wooden cars, these steel-bodied "heavyweights" were built for durability and safety, becoming a staple of luxurious long-distance rail travel. The number "10" in "10-lounge" refers to the ten private sleeping sections within the car, a standard configuration for Pullman sleepers that offered a balance of privacy and open space. The "lounge observation" part signifies a combined space for socializing and enjoying the scenery, typically at the rear of the car. Many heavyweight observation cars, including some early models, featured an open rear platform for passengers to stand in. As technology advanced, these cars were often rebuilt with enclosed "solarium" platforms, a buffet, air conditioning, and modern interior appointments to meet passenger demand for enhanced comfort and convenience.

Features such as plush upholstery, velvet curtains, and later, air conditioning, provided a luxurious atmosphere for travelers. The inclusion of a buffet and lounge area allowed for dining and relaxation, while a rear-facing diaphragm allowed the car to be used in mid-train services. The shift from wood to steel-bodied construction significantly increased passenger safety. Pullman's introduction of these cars ushered in an era of unparalleled luxury and comfort in rail travel, helping to make long-distance journeys easier and more appealing. Many of these cars were versatile, serving as part of the general Pullman pool and appearing on a variety of prominent passenger trains across different railroads.
