The lounge car offered amenities like a bar, a writing desk, and seating for light refreshments, and sometimes crew quarters. These cars were designed for luxurious, long-distance routes but were mostly replaced by lightweight streamliners and, later, the double-decker Hi-Level cars before the end of passenger service in 1971.

Heavyweight cars were typically built from steel for durability, and many Santa Fe lounge cars were also made from stainless steel. They featured comfortable seating for socializing, a bar for refreshments, and amenities like writing desks and even barber shops and showers.
