The ATSF's 1400-class diners were the last heavyweight dining cars purchased new by the railroad, delivered between 1927 and 1930, and were notable for being among the first to incorporate air conditioning. These cars represented the pinnacle of luxurious passenger service during their era.

As "heavyweight" cars, they were robustly built with steel construction, a hallmark of the early 20th century, to provide a smooth and comfortable ride for passengers. They featured comfortable seating and elaborate interiors designed to provide a high-quality dining experience for passengers traveling on Santa Fe lines. These cars were a key part of the Santa Fe's fleet, offering a blend of modern technology for their time and classic passenger comfort.
