The H-10-44 was Fairbanks-Morse's first diesel-electric locomotive, built as a switcher from 1944 to 1950, with 195 units produced. It featured a 1,000-horsepower, 6-cylinder opposed-piston engine, a B-B wheel arrangement, and a distinctive carbody designed by Raymond Loewy. Intended for yard service, the H-10-44 was adaptable to various railway duties, and many units were later upgraded to 1,200 horsepower.

Designed by industrial designer Raymond Loewy, it featured a distinct slanted nose, curved hood lines, and a protruding roof visor over the rear platform.

Originally designed for yard switching duties. Many H-10-44s proved reliable and served for over 20 years, with some units operating into the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Several H-10-44s are preserved, with notable examples including the operational Milwaukee Road 760 at the Illinois Railway Museum.
