Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) I-5 cabooses were wooden-bodied freight cars built between 1924 and 1929, featuring cupolas, a crew living area with basic facilities, and later a concrete floor addition and lengthened wheelbase to improve stability during helper locomotive service in mountainous terrain. There were 401 I-5 cabooses, with the first built in Baltimore and the remainder in Washington, Indiana.

The I-5 class started with wooden bodies. However, during service, some cars were rebuilt with steel underframes and ends, and eventually, a concrete floor was added to some.

The I-5 caboose served as a mobile office, living quarter, and a lookout point for the train crew. It was outfitted with a stove, coal box, sink, dining table, tool storage, and sleeping bunks.

The early I-5s had a traditional cupola design. Later models, like the I-5D, were reclassified with cast frame trucks.

The concrete floor and added weight (from scrap metal) were additions to prevent the caboose from derailing or being crushed when used in pusher service on steep mountain grades. The lengthened wheelbase was also to improve stability.
